What I love about the Career Transitions For Dancers gala is that it brings together performers from different corners of the dance world. At tonight’s gala, called Jump for Joy, we’ll see tapper extraordinaire Jason Samuels Smith; Meditation, the solo that Balanchine made for Suzanne Farrell, performed by a member of Farrell’s company; Hubbard Street Dance Chicago in a duet by Alejandro Cerrudo; the ballroom group Dancing Classrooms Youth Dance Company; and American Dance Machine, which preserves classic Broadway numbers. The Rolex Dance Award goes to Liza Minnelli.
At least that’s what’s scheduled. Considering the messy situation in Sandy’s aftermath, it’ll be lucky if all the performers can actually get to City Center. And we’ll appreciate their artistry that much more, knowing how difficult just showing up has become.
