In honor of National Tap Dance Day tomorrow, May 25, our Friday archival photo is of Gregory Hines (1946–2003) on the set of White Nights. The 1985 blockbuster movie, starring legendary hoofer Hines and ballet hero Mikhail Baryshnikov, brought tap into the limelight. Its iconic dance sequences—featuring the two men dancing together—helped prove to a wider audience that tap, especially Hines' athletic style, can be as virtuostic as ballet.
