Mark Your Calendars for 4 Can't-Miss Auditions

November 17, 2016

It’s never too early to start preparing for audition season. Whether you’re looking to find a new company or land a short-term gig, an abundance of audition opportunities are headed your way in the next few months. Here are four of the most exciting ones on our radar so far:

BalletX

Chloe Felesina and Daniel Mayo of BalletX. PC Alexander Iziliaev

December 3, Philadelphia, PA

The small but mighty contemporary ballet troupe is looking for male dancers for the coming season. The company works with some of today’s hottest choreographers, from Trey McIntyre to Annabelle Lopez Ochoa to co-founder Matthew Neenan. They’ll be looking for solid classical technique as well as the ability to tell stories and take on works with unexpected, sometimes kooky twists.

Staatsballet’s Iana Salenko. PC Bettina Stöß.

Staatsballet Berlin

January 15, Berlin, Germany

Attending this invite-only audition is a gamble, but perhaps one worth taking. The German ballet company has recently had some drama: Director Nacho Duato’s tenure will be up in 2019, and dance theater choreographer Sasha Waltz will take his place alongside Royal Swedish Ballet director Johannes Öhman. The dancers aren’t exactly happy about Waltz, who has no ballet background, taking over their traditionally classical company. Though it’s unclear how the situation will resolve, the company is still a prestigious one—home to stars like Iana Salenko and previously Polina Semionova.

AXIS Dance Company. PC Kyle Froman.

AXIS Dance Company

February 4, Oakland, CA

The innovative, integrated (meaning consisting of differently-abled performers) company
is looking for dancers for a site-specific work to be performed next summer in San Francisco. If it’s anything like AXIS’ other projects, it will be daring and singularly imaginative. They’ll be looking for artists who are adventurous and ready adapt to new situations.

The men of Smuin. PC Keith Sutter.

Smuin Contemporary American Ballet

Sunday March 12, San Francisco, CA

Though this one is a while off, it’s worth waiting for. The company’s repertory is a who’s who list of contemporary ballet choreographers, including Jiří Kylián and Helen Pickett, as well as founding director Michael Smuin. Plus, relocating to sunny California sounds pretty appealing.

If none of these sound like the right fit, check out our full audition listing—we’re constantly updating it with the latest opportunities.
