Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader Charly Barby Demonstrates True Grit
Earlier this year, Charly Barby was catapulted into the spotlight thanks to Netflix’s documentary series “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.” The show chronicles the tryout process for the 2023–24 Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, from which Barby was ultimately cut. But after a year of refining her skills in the studio, Barby secured a spot on this season’s squad, the realization of a lifelong dream.
Barby is a standout performer, with agile high-kicks and an unassuming magnetism. She grew up training with Ashley Firestone at Xtreme Force Dance Company in her hometown of Livermore, California. During her junior year at Arizona State University (where she was a member of the school’s nationally ranked dance team), Barby moved to Los Angeles to participate in Shannon Mather’s Bridge Into the Industry program and danced with the AZ Aces Worlds Dance Team. She graduated in 2023 and shifted her focus to DCC tryouts. “My path to DCC demonstrates that, when it comes to your dreams, it’s never a ‘no,’ just a ‘not right now,’ ” Barby says.
Team Spirit
“Performing with a team is such an exhilarating, one-of-a-kind feeling. You just feed off of the energy of your teammates. When we’re out on the field together, I love to look around at all of my friends—the sense of community is unmatched, and it motivates me to dance even harder.”
A Stylistic Blend
“DCC’s style is so unique. There are hints of multiple dance genres, from quarter changes with hints of hip hop to jazz technique and musicality. It’s been an advantage to have had so many different experiences, because I’ve been able to adapt quickly to the team’s movement quality and choreography.”
Public Perception
“I wish the general public could understand that dance is so hard. It’s a craft, it’s a sport—and it’s supposed to look easy. I wish dance received more recognition for how athletically challenging and physically demanding it is.”
