Our Broadway Faves Just Got Major Nominations
It’s Broadway awards season, and tons of our favorite dancers and choreographers are getting big-time recognition.
The Tony Award nominations were announced yesterday and the Best Choreography finalists include:
Andy Blankenbuehler
for Bandstand
Peter Darling and Ellen Kane for Groundhog Day
Kelly Devine for Come From Away
Denis Jones for Holiday Inn
Sam Pinkleton for Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812
To find out who wins, stay tuned for the televised ceremony June 11.
But the Tony’s aren’t the only game in town. On Monday, the Chita Rivera Awards (formerly known as the Fred & Adele Astaire Awards) announced its 2017 nominees. Although these awards might be less mainstream than the Tonys, they hold a special place near and dear to our hearts because they focus exclusively on dance and choreography excellence in shows on and off Broadway.
Although he didn’t nab a Tony nomination, our April cover star Joshua Bergasse got Chita Rivera nods for Outstanding Choreography for both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweet Charity. Unsurprisingly, Andy Blankenbuehler also got a nomination for Bandstand, as did Sergio Trujillo for A Bronx Tale and Warren Carlyle for Hello, Dolly!
On the dancer side of things, New York City Ballet soloist Georgina Pazcoguin was nominated for Outstanding Female Dancer for her performance in Cats, along with her colleagues Eloise Kropp and Christine Cornish Smith, plus Ricky Ubeda and Tyler Hanes for Outstanding Male Dancer.
Also of note: Two of our favorite postmodern choreographers got nominated for their work off-Broadway—David Dorfman for Indecent and David Neumann for The Total Bent. Go Davids!
