Jenn Freeman in Room to Move

June 6, 2025

In Room to Move, director Alexander Hammer paints an intimate portrait of acclaimed choreographer, performer, and teacher Jenn Freeman at a vulnerable moment: receiving a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder at age 33. Freeman is known for the physicality and expressivity of her choreography as well as for her impact as an educator. And yet behind her artistry was a lifetime of sensory overload, anxiety, socio-emotional challenges, and, more recently, the realization that dance has been at least in part a coping mechanism.

Room to Move follows Freeman as she develops the 2023 evening-length soloIs It Thursday Yet?” with choreographer Sonya Tayeh. Executive produced by Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer, the documentary captures Freeman’s progress with sensitivity, interspersing choreography as a way to illuminate the journey propelling the creation of her new work.

Room to Move premieres at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival June 11 to 13.
